Come to the Dart side (traditional) by alexskyline Come to the Dart side (traditional) by alexskyline
Please, guys, wait! Don't start judging without me! I am participating, too!! *panting*

Acrylics on black paper, 65x50cm (~25x20 inches).

When I first received a newsletter, saying "There's no Dart without art", I've deleted it with the words "leave this to the Star Wars fans". (Didn't occur to me the guy in question is Darth.) However, when I saw the same bulletin in my messages, the word "car" caught my eye. And after that I knew, I wouldn't be myself if I don't participate!

About the concept

Once I've got the Vader association, it was hard to think of anything else (hence the title). I wanted something black, and red, and with fiery rivers of lava and everything that I'm not capable of drawing yet. But, the inbox held another surprise - a stack of *notbland's photos, featuring the very contest subject!
gave me a simple, but nice idea - negative space! And I've even got my favourite's photographers permission to reference from it - thanks a ton, Webb!! So, I 'shopped myself a quick picture with the car's silhouette, red backlight and smoke, and started trying to transfer it all onto the paper...

About the process

Well, it must be said, this is the very first time I painted with acrylics (guitar charms not counted.) The whole process was all about trials and errors, and a lot of "WHAT HAVE I DONE AND HOW DO I FIX IT NOW" shouts.

But BOY it was fun.

It was painted and repainted a zillion times. Both background and the lights were very even in the beginning, but it looked so boring...so I got some texture and random lens flare all over them! The fan brush is definitely the best thing in the world. Used it both for lights and for the smoke. (Which I hope *does* look like a smoke.)
And once in the lifetime, I'm even content with the photo. The outlines of the car look a tiny bit blurry, but overall it does the justice.

About what I think

Congratulation, deviantART! You have achieved an important artistic goal - kicked me out of my comfort zone (which is, of course, doing nothing), and made me try something new and exciting! I really liked this contest, not only because there's a proper involvement of traditional art (and there are absolute SWEET entries), but also - and mainly - because this is the first time I participated for the sake of making art. It is a win-win situation for me - I now have such a lovely wall art! (However, it doesn't mean that I'm not wishing to battle for the victory! ;D)

And I've developed quite an affection towards the car itself! It has a hardcore attitude. Just imagine it rolling out of the smoke, flashing it hazards at you, with some cool background music...like Bullet For My Valentine's Your Betrayal. Or maybe this one:

That's why we won't back down
We won't run and hide
Yeah, 'cause these are the things that we can't deny
I'm passing over you like a satellite
So catch me if I fall
That's why we stick to your game plans and party lives
But at night we're conspiring by candlelight
We are the orphans of the American dream
SO SHINE YOUR LIGHT ON ME!

You name it! :D

The verdict is, I had a great time. Thanks for the contest! And if it happens so that I get something in it...it will be just super-cool.

Phew, that's all I wanted to say. Thank you for the attention!
I will be extremely grateful if you support me and my entry, and leave your opinion in the comments - what to you like, what do you not.
